Electricity consumption and economic growth empirical evidence from Pakistan

چکیده
The present article uses the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing procedure to identify the long run equilibrium relationship between electricity consumption and economic growth. TodaYamamoto andWald-test causality tests have identified the direction of the causal relationship between these two variables in the case of Pakistan in the period between 1971 and 2008. Ng-Perron and Clement-Montanes-Reyes unit root tests are used to handle the problem of integrating orders for variables. The results suggest that the two variables are in a long run equilibrium relationship and economic growth leads to electricity consumption and not vice versa.

The Relationship between Electricity Consumption and Economic Growth in the Selected Member Countries of the International Energy Agency (IEA): An ARDL Bounds Test Approach
In this study, the causality links between electricity consumption and economic growth are investigated for Turkey, the United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium and United States covering the period from 1964 to 2014. The results of autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach, bounds testing and error correction model show that there is a positive one-way and statistically significant causality moving...
متن کاملThe Impact of Trade Openness on Economic Growth in Pakistan; ARDL Bounds Testing Approach to Co-integration
T he main objective of this paper was the investigation of the impact of the trade openness on economic growth in Pakistan. We have been employed both the Johensen and Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Co-integration together with ECM Techniques for the period 1975-2016. The empirical estimated results are the sound evidence that there exists a short...
متن کاملThe Electricity Consumption and Economic Growth Nexus in Pakistan: A New Evidence
This study examines the Granger causality between electricity consumption and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Pakistan using annual data covering the period 1971 to 2007. Augmented Dickey-Fuller test and Phillips-Perron test reveal that both the series, after logarithmic transformation, are non-stationary and individually integrated at order one. Engle and Granger Cointegration test exhibits t...
متن کاملStructural Changes and the Index of Economic Well-being: Empirical Evidence from the Iranian Economy
It is a well-established empirical fact that economic growth and development brings about major changes in sectorial output, employment, and consumption structure. In the context of economic development discussion, structural change refers to the change in key components of macroeconomic indicators, including national production and expenditure, exports and imports, population, and the sectoria...
متن کاملAggregate and Disaggregate Energy Consumption Relation with GDP: Evidence for Iran
Abstract I n this paper we investigated total energy consumption and its individual forms (oil, natural gas, electricity, renewable energies and coal) relationship with real gross domestic product (GDP) in Iran. We employed Hsiao’s (1981) methodology and annual data which cover 1967-2010 for investigation. The empirical findings indicate there is bidirectional causality ef...
